Mathematics: Overview For Early Years Progression to Key Stage 1 National Curriculum

Overview for Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S) Mathematics

Essential experience, knowledge and skills required for Autumn Year 1:

Key experiences:

To have used concrete materials such as cubes and counters, number lines to practise counting forwards and backwards and visuals to reinforce knowledge when applying to real life problems.

Key knowledge:

To understand the value of numbers to 10, subitise numbers to 10, compare the value of numbers to 10, recall number bonds to 5, order numbers to 10, verbally count to 20.

Key skills: To use the vocabulary more, less, equal, one more than, one less than, less than, greater than, altogether, total, plus, minus and equals. To make and order numbers to 10 using a range of visuals and concrete materials. To accurately form numbers to 10.

Early Learning Goals

Key Vocabulary to be developed in EYFS

How this is achieved in EYFS

Mathematics

KS1 National Curriculum

  Number

·          Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number

·          ‘Subitise’ (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5

·          Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds to 5 (including subtraction facts

Numerical Patterns

·          Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system

·          Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity

·          Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally

Linked to C&L, pupils will:

·         Ask questions to find out more and to check they understand what has been said to them

·         Describe events in some detail

·         Use some vocabulary in different contexts

·         Engage in non-fiction books

·         Listen to and talk about selected non-fiction to develop a deep familiarity with new knowledge and vocabulary.

·          Counting

·          Long, longer, the longest

·          Short, shorter, the shortest

·          Tall, taller, the tallest

·          Part whole

·          Number pairs/number bonds

·          Altogether, total

·          Doubling, halving

·          Small group adult-led activities

·          Maths activities in Child Initiated Learning

·          Opportunities to count – snack time, lining up, cooking

·          Sand and water activities

·          Construction, use and manipulation of shapes and patterns

·          Puzzles

·          Dice games
