Science Curriculum Impact

Summary: pupils acquire the appropriate age-related knowledge linked to the science curriculum whilst developing investigative and enquiry skills that will equip them to solve problems using a scientific approach. How the curriculum is arranged supports pupils in building on prior knowledge; concepts become increasingly complex and pupils learn to apply their existing knowledge to further their learning. Pupils broaden their vocabulary enabling them to articulate their understanding of taught concepts, equipping them to engage knowledgably with the wider community and prepare for adult life.

EYFS: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

                                                                                                                                          .

Reception pupils explore data handling through targeted group work. Pupils will use concrete objects to support their understanding in classifying things through a range of scientific concepts. Receptions data handling assessments allows pupils to begin to work independently in Year 1.

Science National Curriculum Concepts

Yr 1: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

Year 1 pupils building on prior learning in reception using a Venn Diagram, but an emphasis on a more pupil-lead classification using a Venn Diagram. Pupils will also begin to be introduced to gathering and recording basic data through table of results templates. Year 1 pupils will be guided to present their findings in basic graph templates. This supports pupils in Year 2 to use data to answer questions.

Yr 2: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

Year 2 learners will continue to develop their understanding of presenting data through a range of graphs and tables, but will progress further into being able to use their findings to answer a scientific enquiry question. This knowledge will allow pupils to begin to explore the concept of writing a conclusion in Year 3.

Yr 3: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

-

Year 3 pupils will continue to develop their understanding of recording data in a simple and suitable format. Learners can use accurate measurements using decimal places and the correct unit of measurements. Pupils by the end of the year 3 will begin to draw their own tables to accurately present data. Building on their learning in Year 2, pupils will accurately write conclusions using their results as evidence to answering the question. In Year 3, pupils will need to use this knowledge to begin to present their findings to others.

Yr 4: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

Year 4 pupils will now know a range of methods to present data and will continue to record, classify and present data in appropriate formats. They will use their data to be able to present their findings of an enquiry to others using scientific vocabulary accurately when discussing their findings.

Yr 5: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

Year 5 learners recording data in more complex formats and using appropriate representation when data handling. Pupils are examining results to conduct further comparative and fair tests. Learners are being prepared for Year 6 where they will independently choose the appropriate format to present findings.

Yr 6: Data Handling – Working Scientifically

Year 6 learners will now build on their prior knowledge of handling data to complete scientific enquires and select the most appropriate method to present their findings. After this, they will analyse their findings to provide explanations and causal relationships between. Whilst handling the data, learners will examine the reliability and validity of their results thinking about the degree of trust that they show.
